Mission Statement for Pomeroy School District Extra-Curricular Athletics:
The mission of the Pomeroy School District extra-curricular athletics program is to expand and compliment the school's overall mission of educating its students.
To implement this mission the Pomeroy School District will:
(a)Encourage students to strive for excellence through competition as the foremost goal.
(b)Help students set goals for athletic achievement that will aid students in developing the proper respect of hard work, discipline, and sacrifice that are necessary for achieving results.
(c)Enable students to become physically fit and to learn appreciation for wellness through exercise.
(d)Teach students (through preparing and participating in sporting competition) the social skills that transfer to living in our society -- these skills include communicating effectively, understanding group dynamics, developing positive personal attitudes, building leadership traits, having compassion for others, and learning to respect authority.
Philosophy of Implementation of the Mission:
Unlike the structured curriculum in our schools, athletics may not be able to serve every student. However, because Pomeroy is a small school, a majority of students can be served through participation is some aspect of the overall program. Sub-varsity programs should provide the opportunity for participation by as many students as possible while developing their athletic abilities. Varsity programs will serve as a focus for individual athletic achievement and team success.
Of utmost importance is student understanding that participation in school athletics is a privilege earned through proper academic achievement and proper personal conduct. Once a student earns the right to play, he or she then has the responsibility to represent the school in a manner that reflects positively on the community.
Toddette McGreevy AD:
Toddette McGreevy, AD for high school Volleyball, Cross Country, and Boys and Girls Basketball, has always been involved with athletics, playing multiple sports and keeping statistics while growing up in Pomeroy and then working nearly full-time at Eastern Washington University as the Student Sports Information Director where she dealt with media, sports reports, programs, statistics, and news releases. A 1982 Pomeroy High alumna, McGreevy graduated from EWU in 1987 with a BA in English and Psychology. She coached Girls Basketball and Volleyball early in her teaching career, but she found her classroom needed her more. She married 1978 PHS grad Pat McGreevy in 1986, and they purchased the Nickels’ Place (home of her great-great aunts) in Pomeroy in 2001 so their sons Mitch (PHS 2013) and Bryan (PHS Valedictorian 2015) could grow-up in Pomeroy and attend PHS. This is McGreevy’s 32-year teaching, her 28th in Pomeroy, and her 7th as Athletic Director. She was chosen “Athletic Director of the Year” for WIAA District 9 and the U.S. Army Seattle Recruiting Battalion last year.
Fred Knebel AD:
I grew up in Deming, Washington. I played football, wrestled, and pole vaulted while attending Mount Baker High School where I graduated in 1983. After high school I attended Washington State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Education with a minor in Special Education. After I spent one year teaching at Jenkins HS in Chewelah, WA., I moved to Pomeroy with my wife (Kelly Hovrud-Pomeroy HS grad) and started working at PHS in 1989. I received my Masters degree in school counseling in 1992 and Principal endorsement in 1993. I am the Jr. Hi AD and the HS Wrestling and Track AD. I have coached football, cross country, wrestling and track here at PHS. Currently, I am the pole vault coach.
