7th Grade Comprehensive Sexual Health Course

Dear Parent or Guardian:

Quality Behavioral Health’s Community Sexual Assault Program will provide students with education about sexting and sexual assault prevention as part of comprehensive sexual education requirements to 7th grade students. The prevention curriculum follows the best practice “Principles of Effective Prevention Programs” (Nation et al., 2005). The curriculum is designed to provide students with age-appropriate, comprehensive prevention skills. Our goal is to increase skills needed to become active bystanders, increase empathy and have skills to reduce violence before it happens.

The curriculum is six sessions of information.  The six-session curriculum will be taking place November 28-30th and December 5-7. All curriculum is  provided at age-appropriate levels. Here is a break-down of the themes for each session:

Session 1: Define Sexual Assault, Set Goals and Ground Rules

Session 2: Sexting and the Law

Session 3: Gender Roles and Expectations, Gender Identity and LGBTQI+ Education

Session 4: Healthy Relationships and Consent

Session Week 5: Bystander Intervention

Session 6: Pillars of Character & Graduation

The curriculum will be taught by prevention education specialists from the Community Sexual Assault Program. Victim advocates will also be available to answer any questions and to provide support to students and school staff if necessary.

Please see and complete the attached form if you want to excuse your child from participating in one or more sessions of the curriculum education. Please note, if you do choose to excuse your child, it will be your responsibility to come to the school and review the curriculum your child did not attend.

If you have any questions regarding the curriculum, your child’s participation or to review any part of the curriculum, please contact Heather Cochrell of the Community Sexual Assault Program at (509) 769-2050 or Pomeroy High School principal Rachel Gwinn at 1-509-843-1651.

Sincerely,

Heather Cochrell
